Italian Premiere

Anfiteatro Martesana – Parco Martiri della Libertà Iracheni Vittime del Terrorismo

Between 4.30 pm and 7.30 pm

For the first time performing outside Japan, dance duo Aguyoshi makes intriguing, poetic and funny works which are very popular on Twitter and Instagram. Formed by contemporary dancers Aisa Shirai and KEKE, the duo explores the streets of Tokyo working inventively with the relationship between bodies and public space. The shapes of urban architecture and the rhythms of city life influence the choreography, which is almost improvised on-site. Defying expectations of virtuosic dance and impressive tricks, Aguyoshi offers the audience the experience of “weak bodies” – the kind that would sway in the wind. A surreal dance for everywhere: through their eyes the city has no limits.

Aguyoshi is a Tokyo-based duo formed in 2016 by contemporary dancers Aisa Shirai and KEKE. Their dance is influenced by the history of Japanese contemporary dance, showing traces of Butoh (a form of Japanese dance theatre developed in the 1960s) but also of ballet and Western dance. The duo have adapted these influences to create a new dance style known as “Moyayoshi”, which has become popular on social media.
