The Divine Comedy is a musical project founded in 1990 by the Northern Irish singer-songwriter Neil Hannon. Over the years the band has included several musicians, but Hannon has always been its driving force. It was him who chose the name of the group when he was 18, sort of by chance, with two school friends. A year later he signed a contract with the Irish label Setanta Records. In 1990 the band moved to London and released a mini album, Fanfare for the Comic Muse, followed by the EP Europop in 1991. In 1993 The Divine Comedy released Liberation, which Neil considers his real debut album, much loved and acclaimed by critics.
