Droog30
Design or Non-design?

Rotterdam, Nieuwe Instituut

The exhibition celebrating 30 years of the Dutch collective that changed the face of design, presented at Triennale Milano as part of Milan Design Week 2023, lands at the Nieuwe Instituut in Rotterdam. Since its debut in Milan in 1993, Droog has established itself as something different, with a fascinating storytelling. Rebelling against the idea of form and function, it has given birth to a new aesthetic, a new approach and a new language, articulating the thoughts of a public and an industry bored with refinement and decoration.

This is an engaging and welcoming exhibition, showing how the brand's sassy thinking and pioneering disobedience to traditional design became extremely fascinating over the years and a true milestone in international design history. From Tejo Remi's Chest of Drawers, designed in 1991, which elevates found drawers into what could be perceived as an art object, to Marijn van der Poll's Do Hit Chair, which, as in a performance, is shaped by its owner with a hammer making the object unique and also very much your own; from Marcel Wanders' enveloping, handcrafted-looking Knotted chair, designed in 1996, to more recent objects such as Richard Hutten's 2013 Glass Lantern, which modernized and reshaped a typical Chinese paper lantern, Droog aims to make the ordinary extraordinary.
