Pasionaria
La Veronal
A stunning work by La Veronal, one of Spain’s most acclaimed contemporary dance companies, directed by Marcos Morau. Pasionaria depicts an imaginary world, forged by everyone’s collective effort: the place we call progress. Yet here life has become an artificial experience and the inhabitants of this ideal planet have lost the ability to feel any emotion or passion. On stage, eight dancers, who move and talk almost like us and yet don’t look entirely human, show us the effects of this loss. The work questions the notion of progress and the values we live by, exposing the individualism and cowardice that are eating away our capacity for empathy and moral integrity.
Marcos Morau studied choreography at the Institut del Teatre in Barcelona, the Conservatorio Superior de Danza in Valencia and the Movement Research in New York. His artistic training is not limited to dance but extends into disciplines such as photography and drama. In 2005 he created La Veronal, a company formed by artists from a range of disciplines, including dance, film, photography and literature. Morau has been awarded the National Dance Award 2013, granted by the Spanish Ministry of Culture, and the Sebastià Gasch Award. La Veronal’s work is presented in renowned festivals and theatres worldwide; these include: Théâtre national de Chaillot in Paris, the Venice Biennale, Oslo Opera, Julidans Amsterdam, Tanz im August Berlin, Roma Europa Festival, SIDance Festival Seoul, Sadler’s Wells in London, Internationale Tanzmesse in Düsseldorf.
