David Foster Wallace
Daniel Veronese
Dramaturg and director Daniel Veronese, undisputed leading figure of Argentinian and Latin-American theatre, stages Brief Interviews with Hideous Men by David Foster Wallace, literary giant of the late twentieth century. With fierce and merciless humor, the contemporary man is portrayed as a weak individual, incapable of building harmonious relationships with women. Veronese transforms Wallace’s monologues in dialogues between a man and a woman, performed in the piece by two men who alternate between the roles. Both funny and unsettling, the performance uncovers the fragility, the jealousy, the possessiveness, the violence and the cynicism of romantic relationships.
David Foster Wallace was an American writer, essayist and academic americano. He was born in Ithaca in the State of New York in 1962 and died of suicide in 2008. He was the author of cult novels, such as The Broom of the System, Infinite Jest (which Time magazine included among the 100 best English-language novels written between 1923 and 2006), and The Pale King, which remained unfinished. He also wrote several short stories, e.g. Girl with Curious Hair, Oblivion and Brief Interviews with Hideous Men. Wallace didn’t write for the theatre, even though his texts – and especially his monologues – are masterfully written.
Daniel Veronese is an actor, dramaturg and director, born in Buenos Aires in 1955. He is a master of Argentinian theatre and leading artist across Latin America. His works have been translated and staged in South America, Europe and all over the world. In Italy, he presented his version of Hedda Gabler at Festival di Santarcangelo in 2010; in 2012 he staged two adaptations of Chekhov’s plays at Napoli Teatro Festival Italia: Los hijos se han dormido based on The Seagull and Espía a una mujer que se mata based on Uncle Vanya.
