Si può solo dire nulla follows Carmelo Bene as he treads the boards all over Italy, hounded by an audience and a press that want to penetrate the mystery of a genius. In these pages Bene alternates between prophecies and critiques, anathemas and poems; he seeks self-promotion with the same gestures with which he makes art: he discusses and argues about immortality and soccer, literature and oblivion, sacred and gossip, because everything in his world is everything and nothing, existing without existing. For Bene “si può solo dire nulla” (‘one can only say nothing’), because this is the fate of all discourse: everything is on the scene only to be destroyed and forgotten forever.
