Dying on Stage

Christodoulos Panayiotou

April 2 2022, 4.00pm
Italian Premiere

The representation of death – a vertiginous proposition. Taking as starting point Rudolf Nureyev’s 1991 staging of the classical ballet La Bayadère, choreographed while his health was critically deteriorating, Christodoulos Panayiotou’s lecture-performance Dying on Stage is a meditation on the impossible theatrical representation of death. In a hybridizing form, film clips, opera extracts, concerts and interviews, amongst others, are brought together through speculative collusions that defy hierarchies. An ever-expanding archive covering more than a century of the history of performance, the work questions the vicious triangulation between the public, the performer and the character, moving seamlessly and breathtakingly between tragedy and TV shows. A love declaration to the art of theatre.

Christodoulos Panayiotou is a Cypriot artist whose wide-ranging research focuses on the identification and uncovering of hidden narratives in the visual records of history and time. Solo exhibitions of his work have been held at the 56th Venice Biennial, Camden Arts Centre, Musée d’Orsay, among other venues. In 2019 he collaborated on the conception of the Emma Kunz: Visionary Drawings exhibition at the Serpentine Gallery. His work was also shown in a number of group exhibitions, including: the 8th Melle Biennale, the 14th Lyon Biennial, dOCUMENTA (13), 8th Berlin Biennale, 7th Liverpool Biennial.
