The representation of death – a vertiginous proposition. Taking as starting point Rudolf Nureyev’s 1991 staging of the classical ballet La Bayadère, choreographed while his health was critically deteriorating, Christodoulos Panayiotou’s lecture-performance Dying on Stage is a meditation on the impossible theatrical representation of death. In a hybridizing form, film clips, opera extracts, concerts and interviews, amongst others, are brought together through speculative collusions that defy hierarchies. An ever-expanding archive covering more than a century of the history of performance, the work questions the vicious triangulation between the public, the performer and the character, moving seamlessly and breathtakingly between tragedy and TV shows.
