Femenine is an emblematic work of composer, pianist and performance artist Julius Eastman, an Afro-American homosexual considered one of the more radical figures of the experimental scene of the 70s. Created in collaboration with the S.E.M. Ensemble – with whom Eastman refined a personal idiom based on improvisation and expended minimalism – the score is deliberately incomplete and undefined. As with many of his works, the written material is only a starting point, not a dictate. Femenine combines simple structures with ample freedom of execution, leaving key decisions of interpretation to the musicians. By providing only limited instructions, Eastman seeks to encourage intuition, creativity and a physical connection with sound. The piece exists only when performed, constantly changing while still remaining faithful to his poetics.

Sentieri Selvaggi was founded in 1997 by Carlo Boccadoro, Filippo Del Corno, and Angelo Miotto with the aim of bringing contemporary music closer to a wider audience. Over the years, the ensemble has collaborated with some of the most important composers on the international scene, such as David Lang, Louis Andriessen, James MacMillan, Philip Glass, Gavin Bryars, Michael Nyman, Julia Wolfe, and Fabio Vacchi, who have either written scores for the ensemble or entrusted them with the Italian premieres of their works. Alongside them, the group promotes and disseminates a new generation of Italian composers, including Francesco Antonioni, Silvia Colasanti, Giovanni Mancuso, and Mauro Montalbetti. Since 1998, Sentieri Selvaggi has been a regular guest of Italy’s most prestigious music seasons, major cultural events in the country (Festival della Letteratura in Mantua, RomaEuropaFestival, Festival della Scienza in Genoa, Festival MiTo), as well as important international festivals (Bang on a Can Marathon in New York, SKIF Festival in Saint Petersburg, Sacrum Profanum in Krakow).
