GHOST We are the idiots

GHOST, the new creation by Barokthegreat (Leila Gharib and Sonia Brunelli) conceived in collaboration with the London-based director-designer Simon Vincenzi, explores the evanescence of an image. It is inspired by footwork culture, a street music and dance style which was born in Chicago towards the end of the ’90s as an expression of resistance and of urban subculture. Footwork sessions are battles in which the dancers defy the audience’s gaze, with music shot at breathtaking rhythms - from 155 to 165 bpm - produced by DJs linked to Juke and House music. With GHOST, through a process of slow abstraction, Barokthegreat highlights the hypnotic side of the practice, in which the dancer’s legs seem to come to life by themselves under the rule of the beat which is also accelerated, as it is composed and produced live by a Roland TR-8S drum machine.
Barokthegreat is an organisation based in Verona, founded in 2008 by the dancer-choreographer Sonia Brunelli and the musician Leila Gharib. The duo explores performative compositions working with repetitive rhythms to reveal anamorphic yet familiar images. Their performances explore overlapping dynamics between choreographic gesture, the physical dimension of sound and the architecture of inhabited space. They pursue a research on vision interfacing theatre, club culture and site-specific works. The duo’s works include: Barok (2008), Wrestling (2010), Fidippide (2011), Russian Mountains (2011), Indigenous (2012), L’attacco del Clone (2013), Victory Smoke (2014), GHOST (2018) and, since 2016, the musical project Sequoyah Tiger.
