A domestic setting established through a combination of videos, virtual reality and jazz music draws the audience into the daily routines of people who live on the outskirts of privilege. In Homage Au Pair, the Norwegian company De Utvalgte, known for amalgamating digital media, absurdity and social criticism, looks at “au pair” employment, a system widespread in Scandinavian countries, though often used to disguise forms of economic and emotional dependence. The exceptionally intelligent performance Homage Au Pair brings us into the lives of three families whose homes are filled with affluence, culture and “good taste”, and yet each couple treats “its” au pair girl clumsily as the inevitable chaos of a newly acquired social status is dealt with, revealing to the audience outlooks and distances that usually remain out of sight.

De Utvalgte is a performing arts company founded in Oslo in 1994. Today, the core members of the company are director Kari Holtan, video designer/technical manager Boya Bøckman, actor Torbjørn Davidsen, dramaturg and producer Anne Holtan. De Utvalgte work cross-aesthetically with experimental contemporary theater. Their performances move between theater, visual arts, performance, and between fiction and verbatim theater. In their artistic investigation of the tragic and comic aspects of the human condition, De Utvalgte work with a critical and curious approach to the social and political reality. The ensemble work is the foundation, and each production is a result of collaboration between De Utvalgte, other artists, professionals and life experts. Homage Au Pair is created together with actress Durga Bishwokarma, singer/composer and actress Juliana Venter, saxophonist and composer Rolf Erik Nystrøm and cinematographer Marius Mathisrud.
