Il Terzo Reich

Romeo Castellucci

Running time 50’
Romeo Castellucci is the Triennale Milano Grand Invité from 2021 until 2024

All the nouns of the Italian language are projected onto a large screen: the totality of the real is presented to the audience via its linguistic equivalent. Yet the words follow each other in a frenzy, they appear and disappear in a flash. The speed is such that the eye is unable to perceive or select them. The words that are captured are detected of necessity – imparted, imposed. Il Terzo Reich stages the violence of communication, the state of siege our discernment is under, the absence of truce, the negation of escape routes. This video installation by Romeo Castellucci is accompanied by music by Scott Gibbons, and is preceded by a ceremony to “ignite” language, performed by Gloria Dorliguzzo.

Romeo Castellucci is a world-renowned theatre director, artist and designer celebrated for his creative work that encompasses all artistic disciplines and offers the audience a comprehensive experience. His theatre overturns the primate of the word, creating complex dramaturgies that draw on all forms of art. Castellucci’s pieces are regularly staged and produced by the most prestigious international venues and festivals. He directed the Theatre section of the Venice Biennale, was “Artiste Associé” at the Avignon Festival and is currently “Grand Invité” at Triennale Milano as well as guest director at Berlin’s Schaubühne. He has been bestowed with the title of Knight of the Order of Arts and Letters by the Ministry of Culture of the French Republic and with a honorary degree by the University of Bologna; he is a member of the Académie Royale de Belgique and has been awarded, among other prizes, the Golden Lion at Venice Biennale and two Golden Masks for his opera pieces. Among his forthcoming productions are Mozart’s Don Giovanni in Salzburg and Bros in Lugano, both programmed to open in 2021.
