In Transit
Amir Reza Koohestani
Comédie de Genève
What happens when the director unintentionally finds himself in the situation of his characters? The uncanny overlap between fiction and reality prompts a reflection on the meanings of stories. In this masterpiece of documentary theatre, internationally acclaimed director Amir Reza Koohestani stages an adaptation of Anna Seghers’s novel Transit, informed by his own experience of being detained by border police at Munich airport. In this suspended time, invisible structures firmly divide those who seek refuge from those who control their fate. The work reflects on the paradox of telling a story from its politically charged middle.
Amir Reza Koohestani was born in Shiraz (Iran) in 1978 and is considered to be one of the most important Iranian theatre makers of his generation. After a brief experience as a performer, he devoted his time to write his first plays, amongst which The Murmuring Tales (2000) which received critical acclaim in Tehran. In 2001 he founded the Mehr Theatre Group in Tehran, whose first piece Dance on Glasses brought Koohestani international recognition. After studying in Manchester, for several years he returned to Tehran where his creations have made him a major actor of the resurgence of theatre in his country. Koohestani’s work has been shown in many European countries for the past 15 years. His plays are noticed for their poetic style and explore, with a critical symbolism, the everyday life of characters caught up in the turmoil of their environment.
