Les Glaneurs et la Glaneuse
Agnès Varda
Free admission upon registration
The documentary by Belgian director Agnès Varda focuses on gleaneurs, those who comb through freshly harvested fields to find edible leftovers. Agnès Varda meets various people: young and old, farmers, welfare recipients, workers, and retirees who glean in the countryside, in cities, or by the sea. They collect leftovers from trees after harvests, pick up misshapen fruits and vegetables discarded by produce companies, or recover food from supermarket bins, bakeries, or markets at the end of the day. The film also features men and women explaining the laws and rights surrounding gleaning and scavenging, as well as people recovering objects from trash bins or streets during bulky waste collections. These objects are repaired and reused in daily life or transformed by artists into works of art. These "gleaners," as Agnès Varda calls them in reference to Jean-François Millet's The Gleaners, are closely associated with movements promoting the recycling and repurposing of discarded materials.
The screening is part of the program Rural, which accompanies the exhibition Il Nostro Tempo, CinéFondationCartier.
