Romances inciertos, un autre Orlando is a tapestry of music, song and dance that weaves stories, characters, settings and sounds from La Doncella Guerrera, Garcia Lorca’s San Miguel and Tarara which revolve around the adventures of androgynous heroines. On the backdrop of Spanish popular and literary traditions, we unexpectedly come across Virginia Woolf’s Orlando and his mysterious metamorphoses. A cross-over between a musical concert, a vocal performance and an opera ballet in three acts, the piece stages the endless transformations of the characters and of the musical motifs. Performed by François Chaignaud and four early music soloists, Romances inciertos, un autre Orlando, co-directed by Nino Laisné, traces and rewrites historical paths, taking the audience on an exhilarating journey of infinite mutations.
After graduating in 2003 from the Conservatoire National Supérieur de Musique et de Danse de Paris, François Chaignaud has collaborated with several choreographers and created performances in which dance and singing meet at the intersection of many inspirations. Also a historian, he has published L’Affaire Berger-Levrault: le féminisme à l’épreuve (1898-1905). His curiosity for history has driven him to initiate various collaborations, notably with artist Marie-Caroline Hominal (Duchesses, 2009), and Théo Mercier (Radio Vinci Park, 2016). Resulting from a dialogue between Chaignaud and Cecilia Bengolea, a series of works achieved international recognition: among them, Pâquerette (2008), Sylphides (2009), and DubLove (2013-2016). In 2017, Chaignaud created Romances inciertos, un autre Orlando, in collaboration with Nino Laisné. In 2018, he produced Souflette, a piece for 14 dancers from the Ballet Carte Blanche (Norway). In 2019, he produced Symphonia Harmoniæ Cælestium Revelationum, in collaboration with Marie-Pierre Brébant, inspired by the complete musical works of Hildegarde de Bingen. In 2020, Chaignaud created GOLD SHOWER in collaboration with butoh icon Akaji Maro, and choreographed Un Boléro, inspired by the work of Bronislava Nijinska, with Dominique Brun and Les Siècles orchestra.
Nino Laisné’s artistic research is a rich and deliciously original mix, which defies classification. For the past few years, he has been creating a unique universe in which the image plays an important role. Through his engagement with music and film, he creates dialogues with sound rather than with words. Tinted with strangeness, his works – En présence: piedad silenciosa (2013), Folk songs (2014) or El Afelio (2017) – intersect different media and engage with historical and sociological elements: art, popular traditions, fashion, cabaret and opera. His works Os convidados (2010) and Esas lágrimas son pocas (2015) sit across genres, from everyday reality to fiction and vice versa. His projects have been presented internationally: in Portugal, Germany, Switzerland, Egypt, China and Argentina. His recent video projects have been shown in high-profile venues or festivals such as FID Marseille, FIAC Paris, Papay Gyro Nights Hong Kong Festival, Festival Internacional de Cinema de Toluca and Festival Periferias in Huesca. Nino Laisné is currently a member of the Académie de France in Madrid, in the Casa de Velázquez.
