Save the last dance for me

Alessandro Sciarroni

Running time 20’

Polka chinata, a Bolognese dance dating back to the beginning of the twentieth century and in danger of extinction, comes back to life in this enchanting work by Alessandro Sciarroni. This courtship dance originally performed by men only is a physically demanding and almost acrobatic practice in which the dancers embrace each other and whirl with their knees bent almost to the ground. The masterful performance by the two dancers Gianmaria Borzillo and Giovanfrancesco Giannini is both a seductive and breath-taking show and an important step towards the recovery of cultural heritage otherwise condemned to oblivion. The project emerged from a collaboration with Giancarlo Stagni, a Filuzziani dance master who revived this ancient tradition thanks to the study of video documentation.

Alessandro Sciarroni is an Italian artist whose work goes beyond traditional definitions of genre. Starting from a conceptual matrix, he makes use of a theatrical framework in dialogue with other techniques and practices, from dance to circus to sport. His pieces have been performed across Europe, North and South America, the Middle East and Asia. His work has been profiled in important platforms: the Biennale de la Danse in Lyon; Kunstenfestivaldesarts in Brussels; Impulstanz Festival in Vienna; the Festival d’Automne in Paris; Hong Kong Art Festival; Festival Panorama in Rio de Janeiro; the Venice Biennial (where a retrospective on his work was held in 2017). Triennale Milano Teatro dedicated a “retrospective” to him in 2019. Heis associated artist at Cent Quatre-Paris and is supported as focus-artist by apap-Performing Europe 2020. His shows are produced by Marche Teatro. His most recent awards include: the Golden Lion for Lifetime Achievement in Dance by the Venice Biennial in 2019; the Europe Prize Theatrical Realities, Hystrio Award and the Premio Coreografo Elettronico in 2017.
