Sfera
# uno stato eternamente nascente
mk – Michele Di Stefano
An off-balance checkerboard, an atmosphere for bodies in search of a possible understanding: Sfera is a classic representation of the signature style of the mk group and choreographer Michele Di Stefano, Triennale Milano Teatro’s associate artist and winner of the Silver Lion at the Venice Biennale. The performance is inspired in part by Kecak, a fascinating, semi-ritual form of dance and music that evolved in Bali in the 1930s.
On stage, movement and voice join in a chaotic mix through the bodies of mk in an irresistible desire for closeness. While words and gestures are squandered, the space of action expands, giving rise to new forms of dance and intimacy.
Founded by Michele Di Stefano in 2000, and presenting works around the world, the mk company pursues choreographic research that explores the ambiguity of bodily states and their alterations.
The company’s latest works present different formats and performance environments in collaboration with other artists: Veduta (2016-17) is an immersive performance that explores the urban landscape; Bermudas (2017-18, Danza&Danza Prize for best Italian production and Ubu Award 2019) is a choreographic system for a varied and interchangeable number of dancers that develops the idea of perpetual motion governed by an organic order; Parete Nord, devoted to mountains, is an international project co-produced by Torinodanza 2018; EDEN (Danza&Danza Special Prize) is a project commissioned by the 2020 Bolzano Danza/Tanz Bozen festival; maqam (2021) was commissioned by RING.
