Boris Charmatz
Often choreographic ideas emerge just before falling asleep, in a somnolent state of latency which is full of potential. In the solo performance SOMNOLE, Boris Charmatz – one of France’s most celebrated contemporary choreographers – explores the transitional state of hibernation, paying attention to what lies underneath the surface, from daydreaming to the scream of awakening. The work of the mind becomes visible through a patient engagement with its passivity, a languid exploration of the in-betweenness of drowsiness. The sound of this meandering is the performer’s whistling of melodic reminiscences: a whistled dance embodying a state of fluid becoming.
Boris Charmatz is a dancer, choreographer and director of [terrain], a future institution without roof and walls. During 2009-2018 he was the director of Musée de la danse – Centre chorégraphique national de Rennes et de Bretagne. As an associate artist of the 2011 edition of the Avignon Theatre Festival, Charmatz created Enfant. Invited to the MoMA in 2013, he staged Musée de la danse: Three Collective Gestures. Charmatz was hosted by Tate Modern in London in 2015, where he presented If Tate Modern was Musée de la danse? That same year, he also opened the dance season at the National Opera in Paris with 20 Dancers for the XX Century. In May 2015 he premiered Fous de danse, an invitation to live dance in all its forms. During 2017-2018 Charmatz was associate artiste of Volksbühne Berlin where he presented Danse de nuit, 10000 gestes, A Dancer’s Day and Enfant. At the end of 2018 Charmatz left Musée de la danse and for the occasion created the collective performance La Ruée at Théâtre national de Bretagne. In January 2019 he launched [terrain]. In September 2022 Charmatz will be the new director of Tanztheater Wuppertal Pina Bausch.
