Yag

Batsheva Dance Company

CANCELLED

For the first time in Milan, Batsheva Dance Company presents a piece in Italian premiere, exclusively for Triennale Milano Teatro. Personal and intimate, Yag is a performance for six dancers about longing, family, laughing at yourself, passion, imagination – and, ultimately, about the way in which memories are preserved and lost. Emotions are transformed into movement with simplicity and honesty, in Ohad Naharin’s signature style and through a creative process in which the performers are active contributors. The dance has a tangible quality, its flow and texture brilliantly displaying both refinement and exaggeration and effortlessly conjuring images – often strange and almost grotesque – which evoke memories of a different world, full of beauty and fairytale sadness. An enchanting performance by one of the world’s most acclaimed dance companies.

Batsheva Dance Company is one of the most celebrated contemporary dance companies in the world. As Israel’s largest company, it maintains an extensive performance schedule locally and internationally. The company was founded in 1964 by the Baroness Batsheva de Rothschild, who enlisted Martha Graham as its first artistic advisor. Since 1989, the company has been in residence at the Suzanne Dellal Centre in Tel Aviv. In 1990, Ohad Naharin – one of the world’s most influential contemporary choreographers – was appointed artistic director and propelled the company into a new era with his adventurous curatorial vision and distinctive choreographic voice. After almost thirty years, Naharin stepped down from the role in 2018 and continues to serve as the company’s house choreographer. Naharin is the originator of Gaga, an innovative movement language which has enriched his extraordinary choreographic invention and revolutionized the company’s training. Gaga is taught around the world and is practised by both dancers and non-dancers. In 2018, Gili Navot assumed the role of Batsheva’s artistic director.
