Au bord

Claudine Galea – Valentino Villa – Monica Piseddu

This work brings together the stage direction of Valentino Villa – one of the most acclaimed directors and actors on the Italian scene – with the words of French dramatist and writer Claudine Galea. Winner of the Grand prix de littérature dramatique, Au bord was sparked by the photo – sadly all too well-known – taken in Abu Ghraib prison that appeared in the Washington Post of May 21, 2004, in which a woman in uniform holds a prisoner on a leash. The monologue performed on stage by multi-award-winning actress Monica Piseddu reveals an interrogation, as uncomfortable as it is intimate, of the human and the unimaginable. The photograph, the tortured prisoner and the female soldier end up losing their strictly documentary and political meaning to become the generators of infinite questions and infinite images.

Valentino Villa is a director, performer, designated Linklater voice trainer and video artist. After graduating in 1999 under the supervision of Luca Ronconi, he worked as an actor in many of Ronconi's productions until 2007. In 2017, he directed his first opera, Cefalo e Procri by Ernst Krenek, for La Fenice theater in Venice. In 2011, Rodolfo Di Giammarco invited him to direct A Single Man, adapted from the Christopher Isherwood novel. As a director, he was selected to take part in the 2009 Biennale for Young Artists from Europe and the Mediterranean and in the Italian Restyle Project Festival curated by the Kunsthaus Tacheles in Berlin. He has been artistic director of the NNNO company and of Spazio D, a production, research and training company. He teaches drama at the Silvio d’Amico National Academy of Dramatic Art. Together with Deflorian/Tagliarini he won the 2014 Ubu Award for best new Italian stage play or innovative theater for Ce ne andiamo per non darvi altre preoccupazioni.
