Just inches from our eyes, a miniature landscape unfolds into a living, breathing garden. Popping their heads up through the carpeted surface, young spectators enter an imaginary ecosystem in which simulated germinations, micro-movements, mechanical insects and climates changes can be seen up-close. Thanks to salvaged materials, tiny motors, handcrafted animation and a subtle framework of sound, time expands into an almost geological dimension. Created by the Belgian collective Ersatz, acclaimed for its stupendous miniature scenic constructions, and by the Quebec theatrical company Création dans la Chambre, whose specialty is immersive settings, the work – designed for children age 7 and up – transforms wonder into a tool of attention, demonstrating how all of life inevitably changes right before our eyes.

Ersatz is a multidisciplinary collaborative project working in the fields of performing arts, installations, and illustrated publications. The company is composed of director Camille Panza, lighting designer Léonard Cornevin, sound designer Noam Rzewski, and illustrator Pierre Mercier. Based on theatre, visual arts, and illustration, its artistic approach sits at the crossroads of interconnected expressive media, in a dialectic between illusion and reality where categories become porous and projects tentacular. Its research focuses on the concept of exploration, whether concrete or abstract. By exploring different types of expressive media and new technologies to immerse the audience in a unique universe, Ersatz’s projects are based on contemporary theatrical texts but also include original creations not inspired by theatre, for all types of audiences, with a playful approach to the stage.
