Butchers is a project that stems from the discovery of a word from ancient Greek and its etymology: Hasapikos, which literally means butchers’ dance. This is the starting point for Gloria Dorliguzzo’s choreographic research. What is the origin of a term that juxtaposes dance with meat cutting? How do you compose a rhythmic score enacted by real butchers, but subtracting meat and weapons? Butchers Capsule is a fringe event. Like a public assembly, Lucia Amara—who curates the dramaturgical threads of the project—delivers a veritable lectio, a discourse centered around sacrifice and the ritual cutting of meat in antiquity. In the sonorous half-light of the adjoining room, a butcher acts out a sequence of cutting meat, replacing the violence of that gesture with choreography.
Gloria Dorliguzzo approached dance coming from the Japanese martial arts that she still practices today specializing in the art of the sword, “Hoky Ryu”. The meeting with Yoshito Ohono, Malù Airaldo, Adriana Boriello, Cludia Castellucci have strongly determined all her stylistic research in body research. As a performer she has collaborated with international choreographers and directors such as: Nikos Lagousakos, Cindy Van Acker, Crysanthi Badeka, Ariella Vidach, Giselle Vienne. Her investigation combines plasticity, compositional rhythm with a special attention and direction towards visual arts.
