Entrance with ticket for the 23rd International Exhibition

For the 23rd International Exhibition Unknown Unknowns. An Introduction to Mysteries, Romeo Castellucci – the Triennale’s Grand Invité 2021-2024 – investigates the unknown through an installation in which the mechanical element completely replaces the human. The work is set in dialogue with domani (“tomorrow”), a performance action presented in May as a preview of the Exhibition.

“The job of living continues day after day in the fundamental duality of waking and sleeping. The supreme division of light and darkness is the false rhythm of an immobile, polar panorama that has swallowed up every word and every language. This silence is a ‘front’ that blends together the cradle and terror. A timeless sweetness, forced to exist in time…”

Romeo Castellucci
– director and set, lighting and costumes designer – is known around the world for creating a language based on the totality of the arts and aimed at a holistic perception of a work of art. Born in Cesena in 1960, he has been active as an artist since the early 1980s and his works have been presented and produced by leading theaters and international festivals in over sixty countries across every continent. He has been director of the Theater Section at the Venice Biennale, artiste associé at the Avignon Festival and guest director at the Schaubühne Theater in Berlin. He is a member of the Royal Academy in Belgium, and was awarded the Golden Lion for Lifetime Achievement at the Venice Biennale and an honorary degree from the University of Bologna. He has been made a Chevalier de l’Ordre des Arts et des Lettres of the French Republic, and amongst his many top artistic prizes he has also won two Golden Mask for opera.
