On the occasion of the OCCAM OCÉAN – OCCAM XXVI e L'Île Re-Sonante concert, where Éliane Radigue's compositions are reinterpreted by Enrico Malatesta and François J. Bonnet, we present the screening of the documentary STANDING WAVES by Sebastiano d'Ayala Valva, linked to Radigue's production.
The documentary follows American composer Carol Robinson is in Germany to create a thirty-minute piece with the SWR Symphonieorchester in Stuttgart. The piece is co-signed by Eliane Radigue, one of the pioneers of French electronic music. Now in her nineties, Radigue barely leaves her Paris home, leaving Robinson to work alone with the German orchestra. But she has to face the skepticism of the musicians, who dislike a central aspect of the project: that there are no written scores. The pair’s unorthodox music is expected to materialise during three days of intensive rehearsals, giving the orchestra a creative role it is unaccustomed to.

Sebastiano d’Ayala Valva was born in London in 1978 to an Italian father and an English mother. He lives in Paris, where in 2003 he graduated in Journalism from the Institut d’Études Politiques. Since 2005, he has been dedicated to writing and directing documentaries for French television. Anche i travestiti piangono(2007), Angel(2009), Adapté(s)(2012), Performants Autrement (2016). His documentary La Casa del Padre (2009) was awarded at the Torino Film Festival. Il primo moto dell’immobile (2018) was acquired by ARTE and aired on La Lucarne, a channel dedicated to auteur documentaries, after being presented at the Torino Film Festival and the IDFA - International Documentary Film Festival Amsterdam.
