Award-winning South African artist Mamela Nyamza revisits her celebrated solo HATCHED, an autobiographical work from 2007 that paved the way for an artistic quest dedicated to rethinking and breaking down the norms and standards of classical dance. HATCHED ENSEMBLE expands to incorporate ten dancers of different classical training and ethnic backgrounds, who combine the different movement vocabularies of their cultures to create a performance that is an ode to the liberation of bodies and identities. By hybridizing Western classical music and dance with traditional South African songs, the performance tells deeply personal stories that challenge racial prejudices and gender norms with joy, urgency, and great sensitivity.
Born in 1976, Mamela Nyamza is a South African dancer, choreographer, curator, director, and activist. She started Ballet at young age of 8 at the Zama Dance School in Gugulethu, her home-town, and went to study ballet further at the Pretoria University of Technology, and was also a visiting scholar of Dance at the Alvin Ailey New York School of Dance. There she began her artistic journey of deconstructing the traditional methods and logic of ballet and contemporary dance. Her work delves into political, social and gender issues. She has received numerous awards and honors and is regularly invited to the most prestigious international festivals.
