Body and Sound
Mamela Nyamza
Free participation upon registration (subject to availability)
Running time: 2 hours
Dance enables the body to become a vocal cord, a tool of expression. On the occasion of the performance HATCHED ENSEMBLE, presented in its Italian premiere at FOG, Mamela Nyamza leads a workshop aimed at exploring dynamic ways of communication, using simple physical movements to create sound through gesture. The workshop encourages participants to think and create in the moment, out of the box, and not to be confined by norms and expectations on how to choreograph and conceive an idea. Participants will also have the opportunity to engage with Mamela Nyamza her work and artistic journey.
Born in 1976, Mamela Nyamza is a South African dancer, choreographer, curator, director, and activist. She started Ballet at young age of 8 at the Zama Dance School in Gugulethu, her home-town, and went to study ballet further at the Pretoria University of Technology, and was also a visiting scholar of Dance at the Alvin Ailey New York School of Dance. There she began her artistic journey of deconstructing the traditional methods and logic of ballet and contemporary dance. Her work delves into political, social and gender issues. She has received numerous awards and honors and is regularly invited to the most prestigious international festivals.
Info
The workshop is open to all adults (18+) and is held in English.
