Tiamat, created for the Design Doha biennial in Qatar, is the latest evolution of Stone Matters, a research project by Bethlehem-based AAU ANASTAS (Elias and Yousef Anastas). Inspired by arches from Palestine, Syria, and Lebanon, it explores new ways of using stone in contemporary architecture. The ribbed vault, achieved through stereotomy, evokes both a creature’s carapace and desert dunes. Inside, light, sound, climate, and texture shape a distinct atmosphere. AAU ANASTAS collaborates with Palestinian artisans, promoting responsible quarrying and resilient citybuilding in response to widespread destruction.
