A PIECE OF SKY – Restoring the life cycle
After a thirty-year civil war Sri Lanka seeks solutions to its instabilities.
A Piece of Sky guarantees to the excluded people minimum conditions for them to start economic and social redemption.
The proposal respects cultural and regional traditions by allowing further implementations with appropriate technologies and self-construction.
The sky means life, energy, oxygen and water, but also climate change, flooding and water, shortages, rising temperatures, the greenhouse effect, rain, and excessive CO2. A piece of sky is a technological roof brought to those who know how to use the sun and rain.
Blue sky will be the leading actor in the background scenery for the greenhouse and dwelling unit mock-up. Real plants will be grown over the six months generating 3/4 crops, thanks to a hydroponic system. The sun is replaced by an intelligent lamp. The system comes from the collaboration between Robonica and Flos.
A big information platform feeding on data from over 600 installations widespread around the world, and processed in servers, combine light with natural minerals and water.
This process can be applied to any intensive and extensive production at any latitude, by installing different types of envelope to create proper microclimates. As a country so close to the Equator, we aim to use the sun shade balance at its best. The LED lamps only act as initial boosters for the vegetative phase and sprouting. Unlike opaque vertical farms, the sun will provide the necessary light.
